University of Sioux Falls
The University of Sioux Falls (USF), was established in 1883 with the goal to help develop Christian characters to individuals while providing an excellent education to them. USF is a Christian liberal arts institution with more than 1,142 undergraduate and 311 graduate enrollees, as of 2014.
Sioux Falls was formerly known as Dakota Collegiate Institute and began its collegiate and secondary courses in September 1883. Two years later, the college changed its name to what we now know as Sioux Falls University. The Sioux Falls College comprised the collegiate department of the University while the secondary program was dubbed as Academy. Despite their efforts to grow the Academy, its enrollment faced downfall in 1925, leading to its closure.
Sioux Falls College acquired Grand Island College, Des Moines University, Parker College, and Cedar Valley Seminary in 1929 to 1931. These schools are Baptist colleges that stopped operation. It was with the union with Grand Island College that Sioux Falls College name became legally official.
Sioux Falls College forfeited its accreditation in World War II. Two hundred students, mainly comprised of women, were offered two-year degrees. Following the return of the veterans, the enrollment increased significantly. But the number of enrollees declined again after two years. The school's financial status wasn't booming either, but they were able to survive thanks to the help of ordinary people who did exemplary things.
