The settlers' fear of the Native American's brutality led them to flee from the village in 1862. The attackers out the buildings on fire and annihilate even the old Smith printing press that the Sioux Falls Democrat used. To ensure the restoration of Sioux Falls, they put up a military post in the site in 1865. The resettlement was plagued by grasshoppers in 1874 but later on grew to 600 people in 1876. In 1877, Sioux Falls was incorporated as a town and in 1889, it became a city.
Northern European settlers were drawn to the Territory of Dakota in the latter part of the nineteenth century. The locals started transporting the "Sioux Falls granite" when the rails transport was established in the site in 1878. The establishment of two private schools, Augustana College and the University of Sioux Falls dates back to this period as well.

The locals had a challenging life living on the Plains. In October 1880, snow started to make the land intensively cold that the residents had no choice but to burn wheat, corn, hay and railroad ties as sources of heat. Even in the face of hardship, Sioux Falls continued to grow in its economy. |
