Augustana University
Augustana University also called the "college on wheels," is a private liberal arts university associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The university's heritage roots when Scandinavian settlers founded the Hillsboro Academy in Hillsboro, Illinois. The name Augustana University is originally from a foundational paper of Lutheran students called Augsburg Confession or Confessio Augustana. In 1847, the names changed to The Literary and Theological Institute of the Lutheran Church. After it moved to Springfield, Illinois, it changed its name to Illinois State University. Augustana University has over 2,100 students from 29 states and 36 outside of the country.
With the primary goal to teach educators, the Lutheran Normal School became operational in Sioux Falls, in 1889. Augustana College and the Lutheran Normal School decided to incorporate in 1918. The two institutions were known as the Augustana College and Normal School.

Augustana University's curriculum has two 15-week semesters with a four-week semestral break in January. There is a total of 102 programs offered by the university including majors, minors, and pre-professional programs. Business administration, nursing, biology, and elementary education make up the top five of the most popular majors in the university. Before a student graduates, he should complete 124 hours that include 59 hours for general education courses. The Augustana Plan is meant to produce competent writers, articulate students, problem solvers and citizens who are ready to take on the world. Students undergo intensive internship, research, study abroad. The university's honor's program, known as Civitas enhances their curriculum.

In 1970, Augustana put up the Center for Western Studies which became a storehouse of unique artifacts and other art collections, library, and academic publisher. The institution hosts a yearly event about the Northern Plains for history and other areas such as archaeology, art, and literature. Further, the Augustana Concert Band and Choir tour in and out of the country. The structure for the Center for Visual Arts built in 2006 became the new art buildings.
The athletic team of the Augustana University is known as the Augustana Vikings. At present, they play in the NCAA Division II. In 2016, the men's basketball team bagged the national championship in the NCAA Division II.
The student to faculty ratio in the university is 11:1. The environment in classrooms and the entire university is great for interaction and discourse. University professors make opportunities for students to dialogue as they connect concepts and apply their learning in real life happenings.
